The Story
The story of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dates back to 1495, when her Byzantine icon was stolen from a Cretan monastery by a wine merchant and brought to the Church of St. Matthew in Rome. It remained there 300 years, even surviving the complete destruction of the church by Napoleon in 1798. Eighty-eight years later it was given to the Redemptorists as its custodians and placed in the Church of St. Alphonsus, where it remains today.
